Confessions Of A Reality TV Junkie

July 13, 2008 by Jacqui Best 1 Comment

Hi my name is Jacqui and I am a reality TV junkie. HAH! Ok so maybe it’s not that bad but it feels that way. My extreme favorites are American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. On the other side I have been known to watch Big Brother, Hogan Knows Best, The Biggest Loser, Extreme Makeover, Kathy Griffin My Life On The D List, Fear Factor, and a few others that don’t deserve mention.

So, right now my biggie is So You Think You Can Dance. I am religious about it; tune in every Wednesday and Thursday. I have to say that although I am really enjoying this season, I loved last season SO much more. I enjoy this show a lot more then American Idol for a lot of reasons but here is my top 5.

1. Cat Deeley – Now there is a host! This season when she bent down and fixed a dancers toe in her shoe might have been one of the coolest things on a reality show I had ever seen. She genuinely cares about all the dancers and is really a cool support system for them. I mean really can you imagine Ryan Seacrest helping any of the contestants with a clothing malfunction. I have dreams about Cat squashing him like a little bug!!!!

2. The Judges – I like all the judges, especially Nigel. He is no nonsense, without being ridiculous. I think having a judge rotate every week is an awesome idea, that way I am not sick of them by the end of the season.

3. The Judges decide who goes home – This is a biggie for me, ever since the Sanjya debacle. In So You Think You Can Dance that doesn’t happen because the judge’s don’t let it happen. Sure America picks the bottom 3, but we don’t have some untalented moron staying into the top 10 because some 12 year old is texting her brain out.

4.  A smaller audience – This is a huge one for me, I have been watching American Idol Rewind lately and I have to tell you with the HUGE stage they had this year I just feel like the show is missing something. I love the stage and the setup for So You Think You Can Dance.

5. No Inner Fighting between Judges and Host – This is the BIGGEST turn off on Idol for me. I don’t want to hear Ryan berating Simon. I can’t stand it when everyone gangs up and starts fighting with him. The fact is Simon is a large part of the shows allure and every time Ryan goes after him I just want to smack the guy. Ya know, I used to love Ryan but these last 2 seasons have really turned me off.

6. (I know I said top 5 but I thought of another) the contestants are not arguing with the Judges – this season of Idol was terrible with the arguing, almost every single contestant argued with the judges. Every time this happened I just wanted to turn off the TV. I like the fact that first they really don’t give them a chance to argue with the judges on the show. The second point is that earlier in the season they actually got rid of someone for arguing with the judges. Debbie Allen told her, well you would have been staying except you don’t know how to shut up, you talk to much girl! It was awesome!

As a HUGE Real-ality watcher and my list is LONG, actually I think that almost all of my TV watching falls in this field, with the exceptions of shows on Showtime and HBO, and I agree with you for the most part. Being brought up in dance, sometimes having up to 7 different dance classes in a week, with elementary school too boot, I couldnt be prouder than the dance shows they have on today. So You Think You Can Dance is by ar the best ot showcase the true nature of the serious hard work a dancer puts into their craft. I do think you are right though, I did like last season better. I find myself not really watching this season. I record it, FF to the routine, and if I dont like it in the first couple seconds I am FF to the next performance. I havent even watched any of the elemenation shows. I am not sure why this season is not catching my attention the way past seasons have. Instead, I find myself watching American Best Dance Crew. As far as Idol goes, yes Seacrest is a douche and Simon is a ROCKSTAR!! I love that guy, if it wasnt for him telling the truth to these people I may not be as much as a devoted fan as I am.
